Ways to Prepare for Your Hearing Test

If you’re going in for a hearing test, you may be wondering about the best ways to prepare. While you won’t need to spend hours on prepping for this particular test, it’s still a good idea to spend a bit of time getting ready. There are a number of simple steps you can take for hearing test preparation in Vancouver, WA.

Write down a list of questions

For those who are new to hearing tests, it’s a good idea to make a list of questions to ask ahead of time. This way you won’t forget any of the potential questions you wanted to ask. Taking a hearing test may be a new and somewhat daunting experience for you, which could cause you to forget those important questions you need answers to.

Avoid noisy environments

In the days leading up to your hearing test, try to avoid loud noises and any noisy environment. For example, live music played by a band can damage your hearing. So, for at least 12 hours prior to the test, make sure that you’re in relatively quiet environments. For those who work in construction or with other loud equipment, always remember to use ear protection.

Reschedule if you’re sick

If you have a cold or the flu or otherwise have persistent nasal congestion, it’s best to reschedule the test. That’s because these conditions can affect the results of your hearing test. So, if you’re feeling under the weather a couple days before your test, call your audiologist to reschedule.

Clean your ears out

While the ears are self-cleaning, they may attract debris, and it’s possible that earwax will be overproduced. Therefore, you should clean your ears in advance of your hearing test. Do not use Q-tips to do this, as putting these in your ears can be dangerous. Instead, gently wipe your ears with a damp cloth. If there is an issue with excessive wax buildup in your ear, this will become clear when the audiologist examines your ears with an otoscope. Your audiologist will then suggest ways to address this potential problem.

Write down your medical history

Just like going to any other doctor, it’s important for the audiologist to know about your medical history. Before you go for your hearing test, write down any medicines you’re taking, any allergies you have and major medical issues you’ve experienced. This is important for the audiologist to know before they diagnose any problems or offer any treatments.
